Dr. Irene Vanelli is a senior psychiatrist at the Mood Disorders Center of IRCCS San Raffaele Hospital in Milan, directed by Prof. Cristina Colombo. She also collaborates with the Casa di Cura La Madonnina.
During her medical studies at the University of Eastern Piedmont “Amedeo Avogadro,” she attended the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Lisbon from 2005 to 2009. She earned her degree in Italy in 2009, then completed a Visiting Fellowship in Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) at the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic (WPIC) of the University of Pittsburgh (UPMC).
In 2014, she attended the Intensive Course in Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) and Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) at the Harvard School of Medicine’s Clinical and Neuropsychiatric Research Center.
After completing her Psychiatry specialization at Vita-Salute San Raffaele University in 2015, she earned a post-doctorate in Clinical Psychopathology at the University of Barcelona in 2016 and completed her training as a psychotherapist in Cognitive Constructivist-Relational Psychotherapy at the Cognitive Psychotherapy School (Como) in 2022.
Dr. Vanelli has worked at San Raffaele Hospital since 2015 and, in recent years, has also consulted at Casa di Cura La Madonnina and with the GET Association, dedicated to treating Borderline Personality Disorder.
She primarily treats patients with Mood Disorders, Anxiety, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders (OCD), and Borderline Personality Disorders, along with associated issues like alcohol and cocaine abuse.
In her career, she has conducted research on psychosis and has presented her findings at both national and international conferences, including the National Congress of Trichology SITRI in Turin (2016), the 14th Conference on Bipolar and Personality Disorders in Riga (2011), and the 9th World Congress of Biological Psychiatry in Paris (2009).
Dr. Vanelli has been involved in several international research groups as a principal or co-investigator, including:
- Janssen-Cilag studies on the long-term safety and efficacy of intranasal Esketamine for treatment-resistant depression (2017–2018)
- Research on obsessive-compulsive disorder regarding dream content and intrusive thoughts (2016–2015)
- Studies on cognitive flexibility in OCD through motor response adaptation (2015–2014)
- Insight and Psychosis research (2009–2006).
