Department of Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy @ Ospedale San Raffaele Turro

The Department of Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy specializes in diagnosing and treating maladaptive psychological functioning, with a focus on adult and late-adolescent patients. The department also addresses issues within marital and parental relationships. Operating in close collaboration with psychiatric units, it provides exclusively outpatient services, including complex outpatient activities (MAC).

The department applies evidence-based psychological practices, integrating the latest research, clinical expertise, and patient-specific factors such as culture and preferences. Individual interventions target personality dysfunctions, including identity disturbances, relational stability issues (e.g., pathological narcissism, emotional dependency), and difficulties with regulating negative emotions and behaviors (e.g., borderline personality disorder, adult ADHD). Another key focus is stress-related disorders, addressing psychological distress caused by overwhelming adverse events, ranging from adjustment disorders to post-traumatic conditions.

In partnership with the Developmental Psychopathology and Health Psychology services, the department ensures comprehensive care. It maintains a strong relationship with the Faculty of Psychology at Vita-Salute San Raffaele University, fostering a virtuous cycle between scientific research and improvements in diagnostic and therapeutic standards.

Available treatments include individual cognitive-behavioral and psychodynamic therapies, alongside evidence-based approaches such as Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Mentalization-Based Treatment, and System Training for Emotional Predictability and Problem Solving. The department also offers manualized therapies for adult attention deficit issues and stress-response syndromes, including Cognitive Processing Therapy.

Interventions extend to family crises triggered by life transitions, relational conflicts (e.g., separation, infidelity), illness, economic challenges, or traumatic events, addressing dynamics within marital, parental, and broader family systems. Outpatient services are private, while MAC services are covered by the National Health System.
